GK Cheer caught up with America's 2014 Best Athlete, Addison Daniel of Kansas City Athletic Cheer (KCAC) in Overland Park, KS, to hear about her success as a cheerleader, how it all started, and what she looks for in an All Star cheerleading uniform.
GK Cheer: How does it feel to be named America's Athlete of the year?
AD: I feel proud and blessed to represent America’s Best as Athlete of the Year. It makes me feel good to know that younger athletes are looking to me as their inspiration. I strive to be a role model for future cheerleaders on and off the mat and this gives me that opportunity.
GK Cheer: How did you get involved in cheerleading and how old were you?
AD: I was four years old when my mom started working at Kansas City Athletic Cheer. Since we were there all the time, I just fell into the sport.
GK Cheer: When it comes to a competition or performance, how do you get psyched up before you go onto the floor?
AD: I love to spend time with my teammates who are also my best friends. We like to relax, hangout, and listen to music while we do our hair and makeup. We all help each other. Most importantly, I eat lots of sour patch kids.
GK Cheer: What is your favorite part about cheerleading? What is your favorite skill you have learned?
AD: My favorite skill about cheerleading is stunting. I love trying new stunts with my teammates, but my favorite part is making memories with all my best friends.
GK Cheer: What advice would you give to someone looking to advance in the sport of cheerleading?
AD: My advice would be to never compare yourself to anyone else. Strive to be the best you can be. Don’t give up and push yourself past your limits.
GK Cheer: What do you look for in an All Star cheerleading uniform?
AD: I look for All Star cheer uniforms that look good on the stage. I like clean styles lines and lots of bling so the stage lights reflect off them.
GK Cheer: What do you love most about GK Cheer uniforms?
AD: I love GK Cheer uniforms because, not only do they look amazing, they are super comfortable. I have yet to own a GK cheerleading uniform that is uncomfortable. GK Cheer uniforms are easy to move in, which allows me to execute my skills on stage without worrying about wardrobe malfunctions.
